Most of us have heard the old Shakespearian phrase “All the Worlds’ a Stage;” which happens to be the first line in a monologue that compares life to a play. If there is any truth in that phrase and that monologue, then The Fourth Wall is surely present in our everyday lives.
The Fourth Wall, though most commonly known as a term used in theatre, is the idea of an imaginary wall between the audience and the performer.
As you well know our lives are filled with dramatic events. Some of these events are perpetrated by our own free will towards another, and when this happens that imaginary wall is broken because you invoked an outright physical response from the engaged individual. Others force us to bare-witness to an event that invokes a response within ourselves, and the wall remains impermeable because we didn’t contribute to the event but processed it internally. These events, perpetrated or observed, can be quite tragic and lead us to tears, and others times they are comedic and make us laugh out loud. One thing is certain, on life’s stage it isn’t always up to us to decide our fate or the fate of The Fourth Wall, it’s how we process these events that matter.
